Our Big Valla Road Trip

Day Six

Today Jo went off for a ladies pampering morning and the rest of stayed at camp, we went over to the men’s secret business and the boys had a go at the tilt and balance, whilst Andrew changed the main jet in his carby. We picked Jo up from the Nambucca RSL and went down by the river for a picnic lunch. We took a drive out to Bellingen to give our batteries a boost to keep the fridges running. We took a wander through town stopped for a quick drink before heading back to camp for pizza and a movie.

Day Five

The new spot is great with water views and once we had all our awnings & sidewalls up the camp was very cosy. Last night we had a visitor in the camp, a possum appeared from under Maid Marion. Dave took a photo and scared him away! Justin was the camp entertainer, we had running koala demonstrations, sexy dancing and singing in cockney & Irish! We then found the Valla fire pit so went and did a bit of socialising.

Today we had a lazy day a leisurely start to the morning and where joined by Hugh a friend of Jo & Andrew who is touring Australia on his motorbike. The sun was shining so it was a beautiful day for a walk to the beach and we were able to leave the jumpers behind.  Jamie, Graham, Andrew and Hugh went for a dip in the ocean the waves were crashing in. We walked along the beach to where the creek went into the sea. Back in camp time to chill out, chat and read magazines.

Jamie & Jan went for a nanna nap so the rest of us piled into Grahams bus and went to the Valla tavern.  A couple of games of pool later we headed back to camp.

Day Three

It was a cold night in camp last night and no fires allowed. It did make for a much more comfortable night in the kombi. Destination for today Valla Beach our home for the next week. We headed to Armidale then took the Waterfall Way to coast. We had cows on the road which made a change from Roo’s. We stopped at Wollomombi Gorge which has two waterfalls Wollomombi Falls 220m drop and Chandler Falls. We then headed down Point Lookout road which turned out to be 15km of gravel road to the lookout, about 10km down Graham ran out of fuel and as his lowered kombi was getting the shaking of its life he decided to head back to the main road after filling up from his jerry can. The view to coast was stunning well worth the drive of the main road. Maid Marion was getting low on fuel so rather than risking breaking down on the hill Dave & Andrew siphoned some of our fuel out to give her a top up, Andrew didn’t enjoy the experience. We had a bite of lunch and the hail started just as we were finishing off so a quick pack up & back in the vans to warm up. Next stop was Ebor Falls where we up with another Kombi on route to Valla turns out they are friends of Klair. We picked up Graham & Justin from the café in Ebor and we all fuelled up before heading on our way. Last stop for the day was at the Dorrigo Rainforest centre where most of us enjoyed the views from the end of the skywalk, Justin & Graham needed a bit of coaxing to get the end. A quick walk through the rainforest floor and it was time to hit the road for the final leg to Valla. It will be quick turn around when we get to Valla go and enjoy a chinese with the vallaites.

Day Four

After a few drinks in the Woolshed last night Justin’s tent took a walk into the middle of the road, which entertained the rest of us but Justin wasn’t happy when he returned to camp.

This morning we all gathered and cruised along to Urunga to the Honey Pot where they laid on a delicious morning tea. The boys where drooling over one of the Barn doors and after they opened the engine lid we didn’t think we would get them back on the cruise! On we went to Coffs Harbour for a photo shoot at the Big Banana, we had 43 VW’s and the sun was shining which was a pleasant change after the cold the day before. We all went our separate ways and stocked up on supplies before heading back to camp.

Jo and Andrew were set back up, we got ourselves set up and settled down to chill out. We got a visit from a couple of guys asking how long we were staying as we were camped where they park their cars and put up their gazebo. Donna came over and we went for a walk to look at other options where we could camp. We found a nice little spot with views of the creek so did a quick re location.

Tonight we met Craig & Jane from Queensland who will be travelling to WA after Valla and will join us on the trip back. We’re staying in camp for dinner tonight.

Day Two

After an early dinner at the tavern we retired to the fire pit to light the fire that Jan had scrimmaged around for wood for earlier. Dave swears he saw a really impressive shooting star but Jamie reckons it was Andrew laser light, we will never know. A bit more star watching then it was an early night to try and catch up on some missed sleep.

When we were preparing for the trip I kept being told how cold it was going to be so we have lots of warm clothes coats and blankets, what we didn’t prepare for was heat and last night was so hot the kombi was like an oven no blankets required! I spent the night getting up opening the door to try and get some cool air in then closing it every time the rain started!!

First morning went as planned and we left camp at 8.30 heading to Tamworth.

We took the tourists routes and enjoyed the scenery along the way.

Tonight’s camp definitely going to be a cold one tonight.
